Cracow marks 68th ghetto liquidation
Crowds of people left the Ghetto Heroes Square in Cracow on Sunday to go to the former Nazi death camp in Cracow's district of Plaszow in the Remembrance March organised on the 68th anniversary of the liquidation of Cracow Ghetto.
Participants in the March lit candles and laid flowers at the preserved fragment of the former ghetto's wall. At the premises of the former Plaszow death camp they said caddish, the prayer for the dead.
The march was attended by Cracow Mayor Jacek Majchrowski, Malopolska province governor Stanislaw Kracik, Israeli deputy Ambassador Nadav Eshcar and leader of the Union of Jewish Confessional Community in Cracow Tadeusz Jakubowicz who 68 years ago as five-year-old boy crossed the route together with his mother.
Remembrance Marches are held every year on the anniversary of the liquidation of Cracow Ghetto. Its participants cross a four-kilometre route from the "Under the Eagle" pharmacy at the square to Plaszow - covering the same route Jews had to go to reach Plaszow.
The German Nazis established the Cracow Ghetto in 1941. It was inhabited by 17,000 Jews, a number of which were later saved by German businessman Oscar Schindler who employed them in his factory.
Ceremonies marking the anniversary of the ghetto liquidation are held under the honorary patronage of the Cracow mayor, Malopolskie province governor and head of the Jewish Confessional Community in Cracow. (km)
